Introduction
This document describes the official rules (“Official Rules”) of the Penang Science Council Logo and Mascot Design Contest (the “Contest”), organized by the Penang Science Council (“PSC”). The aim of this contest is to design a logo and mascot for the Penang Science Council, which is a collaboration between the Penang State Government and the Industry. Information on how to enter and prize details can be found in the Official Rules section. To the extent of any inconsistency, these Official Rules prevail.

Tagline
“Inspiring Innovation.” This tagline should be the theme for the logo and mascot of Penang Science Council.

Definitions:
“Entry” means a logo design created by the Entrant for this Contest.
“Entrant” means the individual who submits an Entry under the terms of this Contest.

Eligibility:
1. The Contest is open only to individuals. The Contest is not open to companies, educational institutions, organizations, etc, or to groups associated with such institutions.
2. Committee Members of the Penang Science Council (PSC), the contest judges and their immediate families are not eligible to enter the Contest.
3. Entrants must be of sufficient legal age and standing to enter into a contract with PSC as required below.
How to Enter:
1. Initial entries must be submitted by email to logo@bizwiseconsult.com. Entries must be submitted as a scalable vector graphic in EPS format, or as a JPG file. Please see the Submission Guidelines below for further information.
2. The email submitted by Entrant must include: - name, age, postal address, phone number and email address of the Entrant.
3. No more than 3 Entries may be submitted by any one Entrant.
4. Entries must conform to the Submission Guidelines set out below. Entries which fail to do so will be rejected.
5. The deadline for Entries is midnight (one minute after 2359) on 07 June 2010.
6. The PSC logo contest organizing committee will not be responsible for entries or responses lost in transit.
7. There is no fee required to enter the Contest.
8. Hand drawn entries will also be accepted. Submissions must be posted or hand delivered to:

Submission Guidelines
The aim of the contest is to design a logo and mascot for the Penang Science Council. The winning logo and mascot will be used online, in print, on marketing campaigns and events. Flexibility is a key requirement, including the ability to re-size easily and to look good in black and white, as well as in colour. The final version of the logo will need to be suitable for high quality printing.

While the logo needs to look good at relatively small sizes, it will not need to be shrunk for use as a Favicon.
Because of the requirement to register the logo as trademark, Entrants should take care to ensure that their Entries are not in any way similar to existing logos or other copyrighted images. A logo that cannot be registered as a trademark, no matter how well crafted, cannot win the Contest.
The logo must contain the spirit of the Penang Science Council (where the PSC aims to promote science). Please see below for information on graphic formats.
The logo may or may not contain the words “Penang Science Council” depending on designer.
The limit on attachment sizes for our email is 5Mb. If your submission exceeds this size, even after compression, please send the images individually and note clearly in your emails that you are doing so.

PCA to train 38 new ICT firms this year

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Cluster Alliance Sdn Bhd (PCA) plans to train 38 new information and communications technology (ICT) companies annually at its newly established RM1.7mil “enterprise laboratory” starting this year.

Managing director Datuk Mohd Noor Md Kamaludin told StarBiz that the 10,800 sq ft enterprise laboratory in Mayan Mall in Bayan Baru, would train start-up ICT companies in areas such as ICT business model development, software architecture and designing, technical and soft skills training as well as marketing.

The enterprise laboratory has the capacity to train up to 38 new ICT companies annually, according to Noor.

“Start-up ICT companies in Malaysia can write to us should they need training in their business.

“We will provide assistance for them to obtain financial aid from SME Corp Malaysia, Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida), and Malaysia External Trade Corp.

“The financial assistance from these agencies would cover the rental, which is about RM100,000 a year for an incubator unit at the enterprise laboratory, and funds for marketing and obtain ISO certification for the products,” he said.

The value of ICT business process outsourcing (BPO) jobs outsourced by companies and multinational corporations (MNCs) worldwide to ICT firms located in Penang has been estimated to be around US$800mil a year, according to Noor.

In 2009, a KPMG report entitled “Exploring Global Frontiers” picked Penang as one of the top 31 sites with the potential to be an alternative ICT-BPO hub to established Indian cities.

“However there are only a handful of such ICT incubation laboratories in the country to train and prepare new ICT companies to enter the ICT-BPO business,” Noor said.

The enterprise laboratory, managed by PCA, is established with funding from the Penang government, Software Consortium of Penang (Scope) and bumiputra ICT clusters Techbiz and ICT Penang.

The Penang government gave RM1.6mil, while Scope and the two bumiputra clusters collectively contributed RM100,000.

“This is the first such ICT enterprise laboratory in the country that is jointly set up by the state government and the private sector.

“Scope members will provide the coaching and training for the new ICT companies,” Noor said.

Meanwhile, Scope chairman Jeffrey Lim said the value of BPO jobs outsourced to Penang from around the world was expected to further increase this year.

“We expect the value to rise by about 20% this year over 2009, as more MNCs want to reduce their operation costs,” he said.

Lim said ICT companies in Penang had developed a niche market by supplying BPO solutions for medical billings systems, web hosting, business match-making, education as well as digital audio and visual content.

He added that Scope was now involved in developing a software programme that would serve as a common e-learning language platform for ICT clusters worldwide to exchange data on innovative ICT technical applications.

“This Global Connect Project is funded by Mida. We are targeting to complete the development of the software within 12 months,” Lim said.

Malaysian firm buys social network pioneer

Friendster

An affiliate of a Malaysian online payment firm has jumped into the social networking business by agreeing to buy Friendster Inc. of Mountain View, the two companies announced early Thursday in Kuala Lumpur.

MOL Global Pte. Ltd., an affiliate of MOL AccessPortal Berhad of Kuala Lumpur, has agreed to buy 100 percent of the firm that pioneered social networking.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. A published report last week said Friendster was close to selling itself to a firm from Asia in a deal worth $100 million.

In a press release, the two companies said the combined entity would merge MOL’s e-commerce platform with Friendster’s social network of 115 million users worldwide.

“The merger with Friendster will continue to transform the social networking industry, combining a highly intuitive and successful social media site and online marketing channel with an integrated payment platform and content network, which includes games, goods, gifts, music and video,” Ganesh Kumar Bangah, MOL president and chief executive, said in a news release.

Friendster, founded in 2002 by computer programmer Jonathan Abrams, was the early king of social networking in the United States, but was eventually lapped first by MySpace and now by Facebook, which has 350 million members worldwide.

However, Friendster went on to carve its own niche in Southeast Asia, where it has more than 75 million members.

The statement said MOL will leverage the brick-and-mortar holdings in the region of its principal shareholder, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, chairman and CEO of Berjaya Corporation Berhad, a Malaysian conglomerate with more than $1.8 billion on annual revenues.

The company said it plans to use those holdings, which include Starbucks, 7-Eleven, Borders, Krispy Kreme, Wendy’s and Papa John’s Pizza franchises, to “localize and extend the online reach of social networking in Southeast Asia.”

“We are creating a unique company that will be well-positioned to provide content to a huge, regional user base here in Southeast Asia,” said Bangah, who becomes group CEO of the combined company.

Friendster’s Australia-based CEO Richard Kimber will join the new company’s board as a “non-executive chairman,” holding an advisory role, a Friendster spokesman said.

Last week, Friendster unveiled a new look and logo design, along with several new features that were part of a previous partnership with MOL announced in October.

Since the economy crisis that started last year, there was few stimulus package rolled out to let our business community get through it by our Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib.

One of them was the MIDA Grant to enable professional associations. As there are not many professional associations in Malaysia, few normal people can think of include bar council, engineering association, accounting association like CPA or ACCA, doctor association and then SCoPe falls under software professional association.

So lucky that we proposed for a RM 1.5million grant to upgrade our association capability to the next level and 1 million of it has been approved.

Since inception, we got funding from state government as well as some support for events from federal government but this time is the largest amount we got for a full phase project!

Let’s see what we can do for Penang and Malaysia!
