This year boss academy wasn’t as hot as pass years. This maybe caused by the economic crisis currently hitting on the world.
But one of the best thing that happened was i being able to meet up with Mr Chong who is the Chairman for Parkson Group and Lion Group.
This was the picture that was taken at the nick of time before Mr William flew off from his helicopter from the sunway pyramid hotel.
The seminar was a few session by famous economist from Malaysia which they stated facts and figures of how serious the economy is currently. But all they can tell us is how serious there is still no way to counter it or handle it.
luckily as always, PUMM supplied the best entrepreneur and Si Fu from malaysia Tan Sri Willam Chong and others to give us the real way to counter and prepare for it.
Dear friends, committee, partners, State representative and advisors,
A happy Chinese New Year! Hope everyone can enjoy this long festive holiday and have a nice time.I know it has been a tough 2008. But I do think that we have a great bright 2009 ahead! With this email I am writing about some of the achievements we have done for the year 2008 and what do we expect to come in the year 2009.1. Funding for members During year 2008 due to the slowdown in economy the ICT sector is going through tough times, as such together with SCoPe committee we brought in the grants agencies such as cradle grant from MOF and technopreneur grant division from MDec for forum to enhance relationship as well as bringing the latest info on grant requirements. As such we have actually more than 6 recipients for technopreneur grant of 150k per applicant not including other public members benefiting from our promotion, also more than 5 recipients in cradle grant from 50k to 150k per applicant. If you are building something innovative and you have not yet applied, do logon to www.cradle.com.my and http://www.mscmalaysia.my/topic/Pre-Seed+Fund to apply.
2. Training for membersBeside funding, another category we focus on is to have skill enhancement for members’ companies with very low cost. With collaboration with PSDC during year 2008, we have properly structured out syllabus for course such as open source, MySQL, Microsoft and many other ICT training. With limited resource we have launched our own SCOPE ICT training with open source PHP on 17 January 2008 and out of our expectation, the response was overwhelming with 120% participation and we are happy to announce that we would have a series planned out for the year 2009. The coming training include online marketing, Microsoft ASP.net, MSSQL database and open source ranging from beginner, intermediate to professional level. With members contributing trainers and venue for these training, I am confidence to say that we have the best quality training from real experienced developers with the lowest cost in the world. Up to date, due to the great response and contribution we are having towards members and community, Microsoft as well as many other training companies are willing to partner with us on training.3. Community ICT AwarenessDuring the year 2008, we have partnered with Microsoft to launch their ‘bizspark program’ (www.microsoft.com/bizspark) which give applicant free license to Microsoft software like windows, office, .net development studio and many more for period of 3 years to build local technopreneur community.
Also we have partner with MDec, Cradle and also MIRC to have launched more than 5 public awareness talk on technopreneurship as well as ICT grant available for new business ideas development in ICT.We have also held more than 3 talks in universities and colleges to promote success stories and grant awareness towards the students and academic side. 1 Internship and graduate recruitment with USM and a few R&D collaboration meeting with different universities and colleges.
4. SCoPe brand building and partnershipI am happy to announce that we signed a MOU with MIRC in collaboration on the ICT events and ICT awareness program for northern region. We have also conducted forum with MDec to express what is required by the members.
SCoPe has also launched our mascot ‘SCoPie’ during our members day on 20 June 2008 in PSDC.SCoPe has also participated in WCIT with Penang State Government on 24 April 2008 in KL Convention Centre.
For the coming year 2009, with the launch of wireless@Penang, I foresee that there are more opportunity in the development of mobile & web both in application and content. I foresee that there would be much growth in this sector and hopefully SCoPe can bring in grants in assisting to grow this industry together with State and Federal Governement Agencies. Also as our member capability training is successfully implemented for the1st time, I am looking forward to bring the ‘ICT knowledge trainings’ to our members, students, industry as well as the community. With the help of the Penang state government and contribution from members, I envision that Penang will become one of the top technology advance city in the world.
Lastly, I thank you for the support and assistance for the year 2008 and hope that we would have a great year ahead!Sincerely,Jeffrey Lim (acting chairman for SCoPe)

The press conference which attracted more than 12 local newspapers and magazine reporters:
St. Georges wrote to Inti to conduct a entrepreneur course for their student. Dr Yap who is the principal of Inti immediately wrote me an email to assist on this as i was one of the first few person that he thought was suitable to help conduct such a talk.
As it’s normal to have all these entrepreneurial talks, i thought of doing something more practical and conduct a 3 day course for the girls to really get deep on the topic.
As we started 1st day, Sam was there to help get the fire up through some ‘ice breaking’ games, the girls enjoyed it and really participated well.
After ice breaking was ‘DISC’ talk by Mr Lim Chin Heng which taught the girls what character and category they are in and how to get to know the person better. Great session and the girls loved it.
2nd Day was the practical for doing real business which was meant for charity. For a total of less than 80 people the girls managed to make a total sales of RM800 out of a capital of RM90 ringgit only and proved that a lot of them are entrepreneur to be in future.
Finally we reach final day and we had games, prizes and a final photo which the girls presented a total of more than RM800 to St Nicholas home to donate their earnings to the blind. Great job girls!

It’s a new year and this is the 1st seminar i am invited to speak this year. It was the computer science and engineering student of Disted College.
At the beginning everyone seemed to be very serious about the topic about technopreneurship and startups. Luckily I prepared it in a more lively and down to bottom way so everyone became more actively involve.
A big thank you to Mr Taiff who arranged the talk as he prepared lunch for everyone as well. It’s a great event as i wanted to have similar chance of entrepreneur but have always had to pay to attend seminars.
As i have shared some of my pass stories and also enphasize that interest and passion is the drive that keeps one going so i hope everyone really got something out of this.
For those of you who didn’t bring a pen and paper, you guys can go to the below link for grant reviews:www.cradle.com.myhttp://www.mscmalaysia.my/topic/Pre-Seed+Fund There is even a written news posted on their site which i have copied and paste the content below:
KOLEJ DISTED-STAMFORD NEWS
7 January 2009Engineering dreams
Professionalism, passion and opportunity are the 3 factors that can turn one’s dreams into success in life.
“In the industrial sector, you command respect if you’ve professional technical knowledge and skills,” said Jeffrey Lim Tau Hoong, Software Consortium of Penang chairman.
“I wanted something different in my career pathway. So I ventured into the technical sector where young people can fast track their careers and even advance over senior staff based on professionalism,” said the CEO of Softphix Technology Sdn Bhd, who is an Australian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers certified chartered engineer.
Jeffrey Lim Tau Hoong (centre), Software Consortium of Penang chairman and Softphix Technology Sdn Bhd CEO, sharing his life lessons and ideas with DISTED students.
Jeffrey was sharing his experiences in technopreneurship with Kolej Disted-Stamford engineering and computer science students on 7 January 2009, which was part of the DISTED INSPiRE programme to groom industry-savvy graduates with high employability.
“What’s your dream? What do you really want to be? By refining your goals clearly, you can carve a niche in your careers,” he advised the students.
“I want to maximise my income and the way to achieve this is to go into business and be my own boss,” he said.
“Knowing your interests is also important to build a good future. Passion in what you do is the driving force that can pull you through rough times in your quest for success,” said Jeffrey, who was a 2004 Australia Entrepreneur Title semi-finalist.

He also credited his achievements to seizing the right opportunities.
“After graduation, I went into the mobile applications business as it was then a new opportunity here,” Jeffrey said.
He also turned his holidaying hobby into a lucrative side business by setting up Moonriver Holiday, an online tour agency.
“Opportunities are everywhere waiting for you to discover your niche,” he added.

When touching on career opportunities, he said technoprenuership is a promising field for engineering and IT graduates.
“You should consider technopreneurship if you’ve a good technical idea for commercialisation. Our government encourages it by providing a RM150,000 grant for such a venture,” said the director of Young Entrepreneurs Malaysia Association Penang International Business Division, who has a wide and varied industry experience in the software and engineering sectors.
