Ever since i started using computer and got the chance to touch computer through primary school. I found that what the school was teaching doesn’t really relate to what the outside world really works. But during my study in high school, we were already trained in programming language and microsoft office utilising it for general purpose. This however was useful not like what i have learnt in primary school.
The only thing that i really hated was the high school treated computer lesson as a study subject which we have to go through every function of the microsoft word, which you have to memorize the function, name, definition and icon as well to go for exams. Just like most of our other subjects, it’s more of memorizing than utilising. I was one of the best few person to use word and power point, but to go through a book as thick as a diary to memorize all the details for exam, that was hell to me.
Also what they teaching the primary students now is the same way that i went through in high school, the main difference is that the chinese school are using books that are written in madarin to teach ‘microsof word’ that is in english. And the students have to answer in exam the question in ‘chinese’ format. This is totally crazy and i assume that the malay and tamil primary schools are doing similar thing as well. What makes me even more angry is that they are still teaching really outdated stuff which is not up to date.
Most probably what happened is that technology grew too fast, the internet brought too many application with it. The teachers or schools couldn’t go as fast as technology does and are left behind. In the end, i ask the question of who actually structure what the students should learn for computer? what application they should study? what course they should learn? What evaluates their performance?
I think nobody in the school can answer me and not even MOE can answer me. It’s time to see whether what our students really learn can be utilised.
That’s why i thought of putting the government, higher education and non profit professional body together to have a council to standardize and structure properly what is to be taught and how it should be evaluated for the sake of our future generation and also not to let the poor students go through the stupid process that i went through.
